Inspiration

Some of these spreads are from my first art journal several years ago and a few are from my most recent journal. I wanted to create a post to inspire some of you looking to create something in your art journals when you have lost all sense of creativity, called an art block. If your an artist or a writer you understand this. I recently had one that lasted a couple weeks. It was very stressful. I had to take a break from my journals because I couldn’t move forward. please let me know if you have found inspiration in my post. If you’ve recently had artist or writers block how did you overcome or find inspiration?

Therapy in Art

Standard

Journaling and doodling coloring pages is my therapy. I started doodling to find relief from chronic pain after cancer treatments. I found great relief. It took my focus off the pain and on something more positive. I started turning my art into coloring pages for others who need therapy.

I always loved writing in journals. I kept a journal of documented miracles and revelations from my bible studies. The real fun was found when I bought my first moleskine. I fell in love with the quality of the journal and thickness of the pages. I love books. I love to flip through a book and the smell of the pages. A bookstore is absolutely one of my favorite places to be for that reason and especially one with a coffee shop and the aromas of coffee brewing. Beginning an art journal soon became my new addiction. I fell in love with keeping a journal and documenting memories. I started going to therapy this year to help cope with the anxiety and depression that come with chronic pain after cancer treatments. Yes I said it, and I’m not ashamed either. A lot of people have anxiety and or depression and denying it makes it worse. My therapist encourages my art therapy through positive journaling. Ive started keeping positive quotes and uplifting stories in my art journals. I’ve found this to be most therapeutic and hope to bless and inspire others with my journals. I’ve saved each one full of my art, special memories with my daughter and other children when they visited and trips and dates with my husband. One day long after I’m gone these will become my daughters treasures. An art journal is something I would love to inherit from my mom. My daughter and I share a love for art and have a special bond. I know one day she will be so happy to inherit these journals and flip through the pages and see the detailed art and memories. If you create in a journal, what do you do with it when your done? Do you have plans for your journals? Do you keep detailed personal memories?

Look for the good in people.

There’s plenty of opportunities to look for good in people. It’s much better to see people as people, accept we are all flawed, and look for positive qualities. In turn you will begin to feel more positive and spread positive vibes. People are drawn to other positive people. Do not worry about anything, instead pray about everything. Phil. 4:6

Isn’t it a good thing we have Jesus who conquered that crafty enemy. I like to say the Jesus in me is stronger than he who is roaming the earth looking for someone to devour. Honestly, with faith, wisdom, and eyes wide open and two cups of coffee is a cure for Mondays.

What did I learn from my first bible journal experience?

a9abab3b40e4edc06c5974f3b201b818

What did I learn?

I learned to relax and pray. I learned to meditate on hearing from the Holy Spirit while I worked on art with a talent he gave me. It was a great experience. I learned it doesn’t have to be perfect. The reason, the focus, and the whole point of my journaling bible was to have a deeper and more intimate experience with my Heavenly Father, My Creator. Most of all, I learned its not about perfection or the things I make but the quality time I spend as a form of worship while creating in time spent with Him.

And then, my very first entry;

07fc44dc2b70d24a8b7651a2b621c8be

What would I do different?

I thought I felt guilty at first for covering the pages. My initial thought and fear was confirmed by some people online who asked if I felt bad and made comments that they couldn’t and wouldn’t write on Gods words. Again, I prayed and felt in my heart that I wouldn’t intentionally hurt my Father. And then I was reminded condemnation doesn’t come from the Father but the enemy who comes to steal kill and destroy. He wants to destroy a good thing, a positive influence for other people, this message right now, and he fears that others might enjoy this same kind of prayer time and intimacy with The Father. Don’t listen to the negativity. Enjoy you time with God through your talents He has given you amd be close to Him.

I also keep a study bible I use only for my bible study which I keep a prayer journal with and I keep a small bible for underlining key verses that I carry to church and I have my art journaling bible which I don’t have to feel guilty for art as a form of worship. Enjoy freedom in your art worship and don’t allow the enemy to make you feel bad for enjoying your time with your Creator, the Father.

Begin Here Today; Part 3, Philippians study

A study of Philippians; part 3: Philippians 3,4

Whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.

Philippians 3:7

TRUTH

Paul persecuted Christians and enjoyed power as a ruthless man. After becoming aquatinted with Jesus and the Truth, peace and joy found in Christ alone his desires changed from worldly to eternal desires. What he once saw as gain he began to see as losses.

  • After Paul experienced the joy and power from a relationship with Christ he wanted more. Joy comes from fellowship with knowing christ and spending time in His word.

I want to know Christ -yes to know the power of His resurrection and persecution in His sufferings, becoming like Him in death.

Philippians 3:10

  • I believe this is something we should all be seeking, to know the power in Christ. Truthfully, we are each drawn to this power like we are drawn to light. Christ is the very definition of love and we each yearn to be loved. The power we seek is in His love.
  • What then keeps people from coming to Christ? Some worry they have too many sins or don’t want to give up their sins so they avoid knowing Christ.

TRUTH

Christ wants us to come to him as we are with our sins and he will take care of us. He died for us and He will take our burdens away. A relationship with Christ will give you spiritual freedom and set you free from your burdens and your sins. This a is free effortless gift. You have done nothing to deserve it but because we have a Heavenly Father that loves us more than we deserve or can possibly comprehend all we have to do is accept this free gift. There is no amount of work we could ever do to earn it. It is free and nothing we can or ever will do will deserve what Christ has done for us.

TO BE SET FREE

Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take a stand against the Devils schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in heavenly realms.

Ephesians 6:10-12 explains that we will be set free by putting on t he full armor of God.

Paul experienced spiritual warfare and we still do today. There is great power in knowledge and knowledge is found in The Word. We must be equipped in this battle by putting on the full armor of God.

THE FULL ARMOR OF GOD; weapons in spiritual warfare

  • The belt of truth
  • Breastplate of righteousness
  • Feet ready with the gospel of peace
  • Shield of faith
  • Helmet of salvation
  • The sword of the spirit

Do not be anxious about anything but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving present your requests to God. And in the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:4-7

  • Being anxious shows lack of faith. In the same way our faith builds our spiritual strength and our ability to trust him our anxiety builds fear and gives power to the enemy. Be careful where you put your faith and guard your thoughts.
  • Spending time in the word builds our faith. Spending time in worship grows our faith and allows things to happen in the spirit. Utilize these gifts and find spiritual freedom in the word and in Him.
  • Spending time with God in His word and in worship brings peace and frees us from worry, anxiety, and fear (the enemy).

I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

Philippians 4:1

My God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19

REMEMEBER

So you shall know that I am the Lord your God.

Joel 3:17

TRUTH

Knowing Him and spending time in his word builds faith.

  • Knowing =Believing
  • Believeing=Faith
  • Faith=Perseverance
  • Perseverance=Power
  • Power=The Word
  • The Word=Christ

How to illustrate in your journal bible; My cup overflows.

My cup overflows. Surely goodness will follow me all the days of my life.

Psalm 23:5,6

Bible journaling is a worship experience and time spent with The Father. It’s important to see it as more than just an art project but as another form of worship. God created us to each have our own talents, those talents might include singing, drawing, encouraging others, a teacher, or a doctor to give a few examples. Being able to draw is a talent and sharing this time with your Heavenly Father is precious to Him. Sharing it with others blesses God as you encourage others to worship God through your art. I will share a written step by step tutorial of my worship bible journaling of verse Psalm 23:5,6.  I love coffee and how perfect for my coffee to overflow representing my spirit full and overflowing with joy and all good things provided by the Father.

 STEP BY STEP

  1. Begin by choosing your favorite worship music. I personally love Hillsong United. I also enjoy Jason Upton or Klove if you can’t choose. It’s important to listen to worship music and invite the Holy Spirit to be in your presence. You may ask why this step is important. Have you ever noticed whenever the bible speaks of beings, people, or angels being in Gods presence they are worshiping Him singing praise music? Each Sunday worship through music is a huge part of the church service. It’s important to do this step because we are worshiping God and music is  beautiful and brings joy in the atmosphere.
  2. The next step is reading your bible and listening for Him to speak to your heart. This part is very important because if you are a visual person this is when you will visualize your worship inspired journaling art. Most artists are visual.
  3. Generally, while reading my bible I take notes because I  a note taker and I love to journal. I love to return to my notes later and see how God has spoken to my heart and answered prayers. I also keep a date on the top of each journal entry. Not every person journals. This is something I enjoy doing. If you enjoy journaling this part is always fun especially when you reflect back on answered prayers and time you spent with God. Below is a picture of my bible/prayer journal. Just to give you an idea of what I use. I intentionally blurred the pages because the notes and prayers are personal :).
  4. After I have a visual idea for what I want to journal and which verse or verses stand out I start by drawing a rough sketch of my worship art in my journal bible. I have several bibles but my favorite bibles to use include my study bible for reading and my journal bible for bible journaling entries.
  5. The next step is adding color. This is not about perfection by any means. Ever person has their own style of art. You may choose colored pencils, crayons, oils, chalk, pen and ink, or water color. It’s simply a matter of personal preference. I choose to use whatever inspires my art each time I journal. Sometimes I include them all and made a mixed media page. This particular time I enjoyed using water color and pen and ink.
  6. After the paint dried I used pen and ink to outline my work. I also used pen and ink to write the bible verses.
  7. To finish my journal entry sometimes I add a page tab and sometimes I add fun embellishments. Some embellishments might include fun flip tabs with notes, washi tape, stickers, or fun quotes I’ve purchased from a hobby store or online. Today I added a #heidiswapp embellishment as my tab to add a bit of fun to my page. It didn’t include words just a simple black and pink dotted square tag. Pictures below are a few embellishments to give an example of some you might use if you like using embellishments.
  8. After finished, and if it’s necessary I may choose to use a gloss enamel clear coat finish to protect the pages. This is especially important if you use oil pastels or chalk to add color to your pages. This particular time that was not needed because the pages are not in danger of smearing or rubbing off on each other. You can pick this up at any hobby store or wal mart in the spray paint section.

Joy In Serving

Joy In Serving

Part 2; Philippians 2, A study of Philippians

then to make my joy complete by being like minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and one in mind.

Philippians 2:2

This is the first bible journal entry in the front of my bible. It is my favorite because Jesus is represented as a lion, The King. It is a very detailed zentangle bible art journal entry, which I also love. I also included my favorite verse which says,

Be still and know I am God.

Psalm 46:10

This seems like a good way to start the second part of Philippians because we are a work in progress and many times we do need to wait on him. It takes patience to have a finished work and since he will never be finished with us as long as we are human and breath air it seems fitting to share this verse.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vein conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others.

Philippians 2:3,4

TRUTH

It’s easy to find ourselves wanting to impress others in making a situation about ourselves in vein conceit or out of our own selfish ambition. However, this verse warns against that.

In verses 3 and 4 Paul suggests we do things with humility, without being selfish or doing it in vein. Instead of doing something with our own interest in mind we should put value on others with their interest in mind. There is nothing that suggests this is easy but it will be worth it. The gift we receive from being humble and selfless is far greater than what we reap from being vain or by being selfish. Philippians 2:2 says our joy will be complete; complete in being humble.

  • Selfish ambition = greed or to desire anything more than it’s needed.
  • Vain conceit = pride (false pride), inflated pride in oneself or in appearance, or a desire to be seen by others as more than you see yourself. An extreme desire to “fit in” “conform” or impress others. It takes a secure person (secure in Christ) to stand apart.
  • Both selfishness and being vain are fleshly desires that derive from insecurity and not being happy with oneself. Both result from worldly desires or to conform to be like the world.

TRUTH

If we desired the things God wanted, which is to be loved and to love one another we would eliminate out selfish desires replacing these sins with love and a deeper understanding for other persons needs. Once these needs are met we see a pure love that comes from conforming to Him rather than to the desires of the world. We trade in earthly desires (selfish ambition = greed, vain conceit = pride) for eternal desires (to love another person more than ourselves. Phil 2:2) thus making our joy complete.

In your relationship with one another have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant… He humbled himself…

Philippians 2:5-8

  • Humility = modest, a clear perspective of oneself, to think of others before yourself regardless of circumstances.
  • Humility for Jesus was being beat, spat on, humiliated, nailed to a cross for a painful death, and defeated hell and the enemy so we may have an inheritance to the throne here on earth as well as in heaven. (Yes I said an inheritance on earth, in the here and now, another lesson entirely, but worth of a quick note. Jesus defeated greed and pride so we can be free of these and have joy in their place making it possible to love those we find difficult to love, summing up the whole lesson.)
  • To walk in humility you must first recognize the authority Christ has given you in your inheritance through his death and resurrection. The enemy has already been defeated. It is finished. Praise God!
  • Remember that wisdom is the beginning of understanding our inheritance and knowing how to receive the free gift of joy.

Wisdom… More profitable than silver. More precious than rubies

Proverbs 3:13-15

Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God” …then you will shine among them like stars in the sky.

Philippians 2:14,15

  • There is great power in our words. The bible says the power of life and death is in the tongue. We can build a person up or tear them down with words.
  • As you do things in your daily routine do it to the glory of God. Represent him in everything you do and say and you will experience joy with the absence of complaining. Do it with a smile and shine before men.
  • Put your Jesus on with a christ-like mindset and experience life in its fullness with an inheritance you were intended to have, one full of joy.
